Spectacled owl is the design work of Matthew Bates. Currently the Creative Director for Active Interest Media’s Outdoor Group in Boulder, Colorado, Matthew guides the visual direction for outdoor brands ranging from consumer and trade magazines to tablet applications and other outdoor related digital products. During his tenure at Backpacker, the magazine has won numerous awards, including multiple medals from the Society of Publication Designers and Backpacker’s first National Magazine Awards (ASME) for General Excellence in both the print and digital categories. In 2011, Backpacker was a finalist for ASME Magazine of the Year at the National Magazine Awards. He has also been recognized by American Illustration, Communication Arts and the Western Publishing Association’s Maggies.
